Cop's Corner with Captain Cupp

Captain David G. Cupp

Captain Cupp is the daytime shift commander for the Bartlett Police Department. Each week Captain Cupp will provide citizens of Bartlett with information useful to Bartlett residents concerning traffic and public safety and little known facts about the Bartlett Police Department.

This week's topic:
Safety Chains

This time of the year many people are towing trailers for many reasons, lawn care workers and weekend end warriors with a list of “Honey Do’s”. People towing boats and motorcycle trailers and the list goes on. Tennessee Law states that all such trailers must be secured to the towing vehicle by a secure safety chain. This will prevent the trailer being towed of detaching and rolling out of control until it comes to a stop against another vehicle or an object. Many years back I recall an incident of such an accident in Bartlett on a Sunday Morning of a trailer coming off of the hitch and the trailer’s tongue struck an oncoming vehicle head on killing the driver that was on his way to Church. This life could have been spared if only they would have attached the Safety Chain.

Officers of The Bartlett Police Department look for this type violation on a daily basis and will respond with a citation all in an effort to save someone’s life.
