Cop's Corner with Captain Cupp

Captain David G. Cupp

Captain Cupp is the daytime shift commander for the Bartlett Police Department. Each week Captain Cupp will provide citizens of Bartlett with information useful to Bartlett residents concerning traffic and public safety and little known facts about the Bartlett Police Department.

This week's topic:
The Two Second Rule

The majority of the Auto Accidents we investigate at the Bartlett Police Department involves vehicles running into the vehicles in front of them. This for the most part is vehicles following too close and not observing “The Two Second Rule”.

The Two Second Rule states as the car ahead of you passes a stationary point on the road (a sign post, driveway, utility pole, etc.) count the seconds it takes you to reach the same spot. If you will allow 2-4 seconds, depending on road conditions, you should have plenty of time to react to the traffic in front of you. This could save you from being the “at fault driver” in an auto accident. This will work at any speed.

Any Traffic Questions or Concerns feel free to contact me at my email address.
