Cop's Corner with Captain Cupp

Captain David G. Cupp

Captain Cupp is the Traffic Division Commander for the Bartlett Police Department. Each week Captain Cupp will provide citizens of Bartlett with information useful to Bartlett residents concerning traffic and public safety and little known facts about the Bartlett Police Department.

This week's topic:
Child Passenger Safety

TCA Code 55-9-602 states the following:

Any person transporting any child, under one (1) year of age, or any child, weighing twenty pounds (20 lbs.) or less, in a motor vehicle upon a road, street or highway of Tennessee is responsible for the protection of the child and properly using a child passenger restraint system in a rear facing position, meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards in the rear seat if available or according to the child safety restraint system or vehicle manufacturer's instructions.

Notwithstanding the provisions of § 55-9-602, any person transporting any child, one (1) through three (3) years of age weighing greater than twenty pounds (20 lbs.), in a motor vehicle upon a road, street or highway of Tennessee is responsible for the protection of the child and properly using a child passenger restraint system in a forward facing position, meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards in the rear seat if available or according to the child safety restraint system or vehicle manufacturer's instructions.

If this is still confusing I have attached this card to go by. The Bartlett Police Department has been recognized as one of Tennessee’s Fitting Stations where the motoring public can come by and have a certified CPS Technician demonstrate to you the proper way to install a safety seat. Did you know that 3 out of 4 people install the car seats wrong? I was one of those people until I was taught the proper way to install the safety seats. Car Seats are also available here provided by the GHSO, Governors Highway safety Office, for those who can not afford a car seat.

These small kids look up to us to protect them and it’s our responsibility to do so. Be safe and as always if you have questions regarding any of these articles or in general please contact me.
